I don’t believe there’s really such a thing as a “travel tripod”, but so many people ask me for my recommendation that I thought I’d give you something more helpful: a discussion of the considerations for choosing the right tripod to travel with. Spoiler alert: it’s all about knowing what you need it for and then making some compromises. Whatever you do, don’t let your experience or your photographs suffer because you were too cheap to buy something solid, or too lazy to carry the tripod that you need. There’s no such thing as a magic tripod. If you need sturdy, tall, light, and cheap, you’ll never find it.
