I’m with Matt and David on the travel preparations. I hate to prepare and anticipate on photography. I think it just kill the creativity and also the traveler in you. The worst thing you can lost when traveling is the surprise effect. So, when traveling, try to set up a good itinerary but avoid the temptation to see some photos in google.
This photo is about mystery for me. I think the current framing of trees gives the impression of peeking into the scene. For me it would be more mysterious if the man was looking out to the right, rather than at the camera.
After listening to the podcast and pondering the image, which I agree with the discussion comments about perhaps cropping off the shadowed area on the tree on the right edge. There was still something else that kind of bothered me, and perhaps I should not be commenting about it, perhaps the photographer wanted it, but there is a magenta cast to the image that looks unnatural to me. Getting rid of that, at least for me, makes it a lot more pleasing image. Just my $0.02 worth and hope it is not out of line.
