Making the Print: Printing Techniques for the Digital Photographer by Martin Bailey is the second eBook in our Masterclass series and it’s the perfect primer regarding all things related to fine-art printing. No stone is left unturned as Martin explains in-detail everything you need to know about making beautiful, frustration-free prints.
This 65 wide-page eBook covers it all from choosing a printer and papers, to profiling and sharpening, and then he moves on to calibration, fine-tuning, adding borders, basically everything you need to get competent, which is what most of us are looking to accomplish. But he doesn’t stop there⦠Martin also dives head-first into creating your own canvas gallery wraps and printing for an exhibition.
A talented educator, Martin unpacks the workflow and provides the detailed explanations, step-by-step instructions, and screenshots you need to make your next printing project exciting and successful.
Martin Bailey is a Tokyo based art and assignment photographer who is passionate about creating photography that invokes emotions, and helping others to do the same.
Hi Marty, We’re only able to discount our PDFs, the in-App sales are a totally separate situation. There’s more information on our FAQ page about this all. I’ll email you privately re: your ebook viewing :) Cheers!
Did I just get taken? I downloaded the iPad app. Purchased “Making The Print” via iTunes, was Not offered a place to enter the Discount Code. Then, after the download, pressed “View” — nothin’ happens (screen freezes). I had downloaded the free book first; can’t find it after closing app.
So, were your instructions in error? AKA did the discount only apply to the PDF version?
And, where is the free book and the one I just paid $5 for to be found?
Refund?
Great little book for someone just thinking about getting a “real” printer. I found it useful, even though I already work with printers. My works can be found at http://www.jim-roche.com
Aaron,
Thanks for taking the time to do such a thorough review of the ebook. You’ve convinced me to buy it.
@ Stew, just download the PDF and add it to iBooks.
Every photographer will make at least one print in their career. Follow what Bailey has to say about the printing process and you will save money on paper and ink.

i like to know how to change the background of a picture to another.
My opinion on printing your own photos; plus a review of this eBook: http://nick-larson.blogspot.com/2012/01/making-print.html
As I stated on my previous note in English, I also have a review of this eBook in Portuguese, for people that feel more at ease with the language. So just check my website. And yes, although it’s the same info and opinion, it’s not a machine translated version but a new one altogether. Did I mention that this is the eBook to buy if you’re into printing?
Nice books
Nice books at the right price!
A new author in the Craft & Vision fold. I appreciated Martin Bailey’s writing style; a good amount of detail and technique combined with personal opinion, when applicable.
A great guide for a beginner, with enough pearls of wisdom for most anyone. It really help fill in the gaps and give me the confidence to try some more ambitious print projects.

Anyone who has followed Martin’s tutorial podcasts over the last few years will find this book has the same care, thought, and thoroughness as his podcasts. Martin is an excellent photographer and a teacher at heart. He takes obvious joy in sharing his learnings as he continues his journey in photography. New comers and intermediate-experienced printers will both benefit from this eBook. I recommend it highly. Congratulations to Martin.
Again, an interesting eBook for those starting but also for those that think their workflow does not need more tips. The practical path Martin Bailey takes makes it easy to follow him. Not too much technical stuff, just enough to keep you on the right track. This is a hands-on guide, one that starts to challenge you with a simple “Let’s make a print”. So down to Earth, in fact, that you’ll read the 65 pages in a couple of hours. But you’ll get back to read them over and over. When you’re not printing, that is!
As usual I’ve my review in English but will have a Portuguese version at my own website later today. Now go and buy this eBook. These cold days (over here) at good to stay home printing.
I was provided a review copy of this ebook and it was a great fit for me: I’m a newbie when it comes to printing but I’d like to learn how to do it the right way. An excellent resource for beginning to intermediate print photographers.
