Exposure

For Outdoor Photography

Michael Frye

There is more to exposure than just getting the right amount of light into the camera. Every exposure also creates a specific aesthetic. Exposure For Outdoor Photography is about natural-light photography and the creation of exposures that are not only technically perfect, but aesthetically compelling.

This 50-spread PDF ebook, tackles the basics, and goes on to discuss the different ways of accomplishing different exposures to bring about different aesthetics. It covers metering modes, exposure modes, histograms, high-contrast scenes, depth of field, shutter speeds, and exposure blending, and more, and includes 10 case studies, and beautiful photographs, to illustrate. There is a lot of information for photographers of all levels in this book and if you’ve ever wrestled with your exposure, Michael Frye can move you forward.

  1. I’m truly grateful for the skills I learned by reading your books, including this refined eBook on exposure. With the thoughtful insights and illustrations you’ve provided, I’m convinced that I can have as much and even more control of exposure in my digital work as I’ve had with my film work ~ many thanks MIchael

  2. Thanks, Michael, great book. Easy to understand also for beginners. I love the case studies and the excercises! Other books explain stuff and the reader’s not sure how to use those learnings out there when taking pictures. Thanks to the excercises this is not the case with this eBook!!

  3. As so many times before, a great book from Craft and Vision.
What I like the most are the “Case studies”. These explains different scenarios regarding axposure and how to think for getting nice pictures.
For the swedish readers I have I review on my site.

  4. There is an error at the bottom of spread 42 which shows what are intended to be the exposure settings and histogram for the image A of Case Study 7. They are the same as the ones shown on spreads 39 and 40 for Case Study 6, which clearly could not apply to Case Study 7.

  5. Great book. I’ve been very lazy with acheiving correct exposure recently, just assuming I’ll be able to get things sorted later in Lightroom. After reading this book and practising in the yard yesterday, I went for a walk around town this morning and came home with a memory card full of perfectly exposed shots. Thank you Michael, love your work.

  6. This is the second craft & vision eBook written by Michael Frye I’ve bought, and they are both extremely informative. In this book about exposure I read the best explanation about how to use the zone system in a practical manner and since then I’ve shot in manual mode only, and I feel that I have complete control about my exposure settings. Highly recommended!!!

  7. I couldnt get this to go. I put in the code EXPOSURE4 also to get the discount, but nothing happened. I tried this twice, and gave it time to see if there was a delay, but to no avail. Help please :)

  8. This is actually a very good read for beginners or those just stuck on the concepts of exposure (as well as depth of field and affects of shutter speed)and I highly recommend it. I mean, how can you go wrong for $5?
The case studies are all very helpful and go beyond simply the how’s of exposure, but tells the readers why certain settings are made or why something should be “over” or “under” exposed. Exposure settings for a scene are meaningless unless they’re put in context, and this e-book does a great job of putting them in context.

The section on HDR, though, can be a bit confusing to those not familiar with the technique as it seems there is an error with the meter graphic in the first (A) image. I believe is should be 1/250 @ f/22 exposure (as described in the text) with the meter showing -2 and the histogram pulled to the left. It’s also referenced on page 44 as being image A-page 44 when it should be image A-page 42. Hopefully most people will figure it out, but it might confuse someone who’s totally new to the concept. Perhaps this can be fixed.

  9. Interesting book. I really like books with detailed case studies as find they are able to communicate both sides of the coin, the “Craft” and the “Vision” (Pun intended).

  10. A very well written Book, with all the Basics you’ll need to know about exposure – well explained. I really like the Craft&Vision Series, and will continue to buy the eBooks which interests me mostly.

The 10 Examples are beautiful illustrated
with Sample Pictures and nice explained.

I’d like to read more from Michael Frye, just keep up the good work.

  11. I had just finished another eBook on outdoor photography but as I expected this was not more of the same. Showing that there are different approaches for the same subject, so there are multiple reasons to buy different eBooks/books. Having an idea of the different concepts photographers have helps people to understand that photography is a craft more than a push the button activity. Michael Frye eBook, and is assumption that sometimes you have to deviate from the rules to get the right exposure for your aesthetic vision is a good sign of the freshness of some of the new books coming out these days. Read my complete review following the link. And for those with a better grasp of Portuguese, I’ll have my review in Portuguese, on my webmagazine, Fotodigital-online, latter today.

  12. Hey Folks! This ebook launch has generated a lot of traffic to the site, more than usual. If the BUY THE PDF button doesn’t work right away just give it a minute or two. Thanks for the support!

  13. I wondered about this book since it tackles a rather fundamental subject… what new could be said about exposure? And I was pleasantly surprised as I read my review copy, because Frye did an AWESOME job of providing good explanations of beginning- to intermediate-level concepts for photographers. The imagery in the book worked well to complement the text; I’ll be recommending this book to others. Hit the link on my name for my full review.
